X-30 Coming to Madison

The X-30 has been completely redesigned for 2012. Engineers reconfigured the hull to give a more race car-like handling MasterCraft is known for while, the interior design offers more legroom than ever before.

A few of this new model will be traveling the country during the boat show season. Redline will be the only dealer in Wisconsin to have an X-30 on display. Plan to visit the showroom during the Redline Boat Show Jan 28- Jan 29 to see this new boat for yourself.

Saturday July, 30th is the day...

It's that time of year again ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Bust out the tubes, break out the skis, and dust off that old swim suit with the neon colors because it's time for the Redline Tie-Up.

What more could you ask for when you get a bunch of boat owners together for a day spent under the sun while the water laps at your feet and the kids play tirelessly in the water? The answer is nothing. And I'm not entirely sure what "water lapping at your feet" even means!

Power Turning

Power turns. We've all heard so much about them yet most of us still have some confusion on what they actually are! Well you no longer have to worry because in yet another flash of brilliance by yours truly at Redline Watersports, we've decided to help everyone understand what a power turn is and what types of negative effects it has on the boating and lake communities.

Power turning is essentially this, when a rider falls, you, as the captain of your vessel, crank down the throttle and whip around to pick up your fallen friend. This sends enormous rollers all throughout the lake, disrupting not only other boaters but water front property. Nobody wins.

Though we're not a CWB dealer these boys put it the best and you'll get a few laughs out of the video as well. It's all about power turns and the correct way to pick up a rider so check it out!

How to land a heel side wake to wake jump!

How on Earth can I jump from one side of the wake to the other? This question eats at the minds of all who have ever dawned a wakeboard and today we here at Redline Watersports are going to solve the mystery of the "Heel-side Wake to Wake Jump".

1. On your approach to the wake make sure your shoulders are square to the boat, your hips are up, and your knees are as rigid as your Aunt Karin's Holiday Fruit Cake.

2. As you hit the wake keep your knees as rigid as possible. If you're a slalom skier, snowboarder or skateboarder this will be difficult because it is a natural instinct to either give with the wake (slalom skier) or try to extend off the wake by pushing away. This is WRONG. Stay locked and rigid, holding that progressive edge through the wake allowing the pop of the board and the strength of the wake to get you airborne

3. Once you're in the air, don't panic. You'll hurt yourself more if you forget what you're doing up there. It will take you a few times to get the feel for it. Spot your landing as best you can and prepare to land, cushioning the impact by giving with your knees.

How to get up on a wakeboard

Getting up on a wakeboard can either be a difficult job or an easy one. In this article we'll give you a Three-Step process that will help you pop up and out of the water with ease-- no tower needed!

1. The first step is to track down the line. Let the line pass through your hands until you feel the handle, at this time the driver should pop the boat in neutral so as not to yank the handle from the rider. Once you've done this position yourself behind the boat, letting the toe-side edge of the board rise out of the water. Make sure the board itself is parallel with the back of the boat, not perpendicular like skis would be.

2. The second step is to grip the handle firmly with both hands. Be sure to have both of your palms facing down when gripping the handle, do not use an alternate grip like a slalom skier would use. When you are comfortable instruct the driver you are ready and prepare for the pull of the boat.

3. The third and final step is simple but is also where most people tend to lose concentration. The old adage, let the boat do the work, has never applied more. You've got a monster board on your feet, plenty of surface area to pull you up, so as the line tightens hug your knees with the inside of your elbows and stay compact! The boat WILL pull you up so sit back and let the boat do the work!

Hopefully this takes some of the mystery out of a sport that everyone should be able to enjoy! Stay tuned here for more tips on how to get the most out of your time on the water.

Transitioning to "new school" slalom

Yesterday, I had a conversation with one of our MasterCraft owners regarding the transition to the "new school" style of slalom skiing. He e-mailed a picture, which is a great example of the traditional style entering the pre-turn. Here's some thoughts:

Releasing with your outside hand is important. How much and for how long depends on the rope length.

1) Instead of resting it at your side, hold it up by your chest as if you were going to punch the high school bully for bugging your best friend.

This will open your shoulders to the direction the boat is heading.

2) Look down the lake (and enjoy the view, it will change your whole perception of the ski ride). This is the point where you put your faith in your ski. It will do what it was engineered (and you paid it) to do.

This will help keep your weight centered over the ski and your upper body more upright.

3) Remember as the ski comes around, you MUST focus your attention down the lake and wait, wait, wait, and wait some more until the ski finishes the turn. The ski will turn better and keep it's speed better than you've ever experienced.

4) At this point your punch-ready outer hand will be positioned to easily reconnect with the handle without turning your head or shoulders. Your ski will have more angle away from the boat than ever before, resulting in a very fast, but smooth ride to the other side.

5) Repeat 5 other times and head to the podium for your trophy!

Several years ago, Mastercraft was a sponsor of Panther Racing, a full time race team competing in what was then called the Indy Racing League. The Midwest rep, Matt was the point person for this relationship and spent a good amount of time making sure the boats given out to the teams and owners were always at their best. The process began and Matt was asked to be the project manager. Ironically, just as this was lifting off the ground, MasterCraft’s equity partner decided it was time to sell the company. Again, Matt thinking on his feet, called Paul Ray and asked him to forward this information on to his boss, Roger Penske (a major shareholder of Ilmor) to see if MasterCraft would be a good fit for the Penske organization. Long story short, Mr. Penske and several equity partners purchased the company.

Now this one-off idea grew some legs and quickly became a family of engines to power all the boats in every situation. Roger became involved and loved the idea. As the engineering process was underway in Detroit (Penske Headquarters) the construction process began at the Penske Racing Facility in North Carolina. This was a complete renovation of one of the many buildings on this picturesque acreage to be solely dedicated to the production of the MasterCraft engines. Everything is brand new, state of the art and much of the equipment, supplies and vendors are the same ones used by Roger’s NASCAR and IRL teams. From the state of the art paint booth, to computer validation, and spotless work stations, this facility is like no other found in the marine industry.

Legend Paul Stokes Back in Action!

It was at the Blue Moo Barefooting Lake in Alma Center, WI where the Midwest Regional Championships were held and barefooting legend Paul Stokes has begun his climb back up the professional ranks.

At the Midwest Regional tournament footers gather from all over the Midwest to compete and qualify for the National Championships. Paul was in the open division where any age skier can join so long as they possess certain qualifying scores.

Paul competed in the Wake Slalom Event where the barefooter crosses the wakes as many times as he or she can for 15 seconds going forward and 15 seconds going backwards. It was in this event that Paul broke the U.S. National open men’s record with a tentative score of 16.4; the previous record was 15.7.

The next level is the pro level, which Paul hopes to be in soon and we all look forward to watching and supporting him!

Some more information:

Paul retired in 2002 as a pro and has just begun his comeback through the ranks and hopes to continue breaking records.

Paul is a local athlete and works at Graphite Digital Solutions in the suite next to Redline Watersports.

Nationals are held in Wichita, KS during the week of July 22-24.

Probably one of the coolest in a very, very long time for Team Redline. Hyperlite Rep Rick Skinner brought Rusty "The Bone Crusher" Malinoski to our shop yesterday for a meet and greet turned wake/hang out session.

We started the day with a little photo op where customers came and have their pictures taken by us using a Nikon D5000 Camera (it takes some unreal pictures) next to the Crusher of Bone himself and our beautifully constructed Shrine de Rusty. Shout out to Milios subs for hooking us up with some stellar subs, Rusty inhaled his, maybe should have gotten him a couple?

As the day wore on we all became antsy to do something other than sit around the shop and talk about 2011 Hyperlite product, though, IT. IS. GOING. TO. BE. OFF. THE. HOOK. so heads up on that boys and girls. We can now point, laugh and say "We know something you don't know." Anyways, Rusty decided it was time for us to head out on the lake, so a good friend of the our shop, Matt Hofeldt, took us out in his newly for sale 40th Anniversary X-Star-- Contact the shop if interested!

Sun shining down, glass reflecting up and a boat full of ballast we set out to a nice little spot on Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin. Rusty took a 15min or so run and showcased some of the gnarliest tricks we'd ever seen thrown down while being in a boat. We got it all on tape and plan on throwing that up on Wakeworld, our Facebook, and our site so stay tuned for that! A 900 off a natural double up interest anyone?

The best thing about being out with a guy like Rusty is that when you're away from the technicalities of the job and just out riding, hanging out, and having fun you can see what type of a person he really is. Rusty is an all around awesome dude. He's always entertaining, quick on his feet with words, and loves getting ripped on just as much as he loves dishing it; though given his size and the fact that he trains for MMA with his brother we keep the bashing too a minimum so we don't find out first hand why they call him the Bone Crusher.

All jokes aside I, along with the rest of the Redline staff, cannot say enough about our day with Rusty. We can't speak highly enough about Rick, Ho/Hyperlite, or Rusty. We had an absolute blast and hope he knows he's always welcome back at our shop.

This week we opened up our new store in Beloit at the old Riverside Marina. For the Beloit, Janesville and Rockford communities, we'll be serving your area with MasterCraft, JC Pontoons, pro shop and accessories. With the on water and boat storage available, you can store your boat at the marina, sell your SUV and we'll put it in and out for you all summer. There are just a few slips still available. For those who don't know much about the area, the marina is located on the north side of town on Hwy 51. The Rock River is at one of it's widest points so there is plenty of room for all your water sport activites. There are restaurants, parks and sand bars to make for a great day on the water. Forget what you may have heard, this is a cool place and is going to become a great wake and ski area!

We'll be supporting the lifestyle with weekly wake and ski events, wake and surf clinics and a MasterCraft tie up later this summer.

The 2010 Radar Strada is finally here!

Many months ago, news started trickling down the pipeline about a brand new, high performance ski from Radar. The previous top-of-the-line ski from Radar, the RS-1, was a huge success, and it left us all wondering what Chris Sullivan, Chris Rossi, and all the guys at Radar could possibly do to improve on such a great ski. Well, over time more details were revealed and the industry buzz took off.

The ski was released to the world a few months ago, and the buzz around the ski has only increased. Chris Rossi ran 41' off just a few days after he got on the final version, and it seems like everyone from beginner to pro is setting personal bests on this ski. We can't wait to show our customers this ski now that it's finally here.

The following information is courtesy of HO Skis. Yeah, it's a lot of writing, but these boots are so revolutionary that they deserve plenty of explanation:

If you fall while snow skiing or playing basketball, you don’t come out of your shoes, right? The demands of arcing a turn down your local mountain or cutting to the rim dictate a precise fit with a high level of foot support. Water Skiing is no different. That is why HO is proud to introduce the 2011 EXO System. The EXO System is comprised of the revolutionary Variable Retention System (VRS) Binding and EXO Shell boots, allowing skiers to remain in their boots, but release from their ski in, out the front, type falls. EXO Shell Boot Technology combines the fit of your favorite pair of running shoes with a level of support unmatched in any other water ski boot. The VRS Binding utilizes a combination of Dual Spring and Quick Cam Technology to create controlled retention and consistent release. Available in two different Flex Index models, the EXO Pro and EXO Form are designed to accommodate intermediate to advanced skiers.

Features

Variable Retention System (VRS) Binding:

The VRS Binding utilizes a combination of Dual Spring and Quick Cam Technology to create controlled retention and consistent release. Dual Spring technology concentrically coils two differently powered springs inside one another. The outer, less powerful spring is compressed to create retention for lighter weight skiers. As skier weight increases, the inner, more tightly coiled spring begins to compress providing the required retention skiers demand. Quick Cam Technology utilizes a caming mechanism to transform the rotary motion of the heel release unit into a linear compression of the dual springs. It acts like a light switch. The system is 100% engaged while in skiing position. When the skier gets out of position, as in an out the front type fall, the resulting torque force flicks the light switch to the off position providing the skier a clean consistent release from the ski.

EXO Frame:

The EXO Frame is an extruded aluminum frame linking the toe and heel assemblies of the VRS binding as well as the connection point of the EXO Shells to the system. The EXO Frame utilizes a Free Float Design to reduce the impact the EXO Shells have on longitudinal ski flex. Unlike any other plate design on the market, the EXO Frame achieves its neutral condition while your ski is in its loaded position by implementing an over rocker shape in comparison to your ski’s unloaded rocker line. Under skiing conditions, the system is complete and all components are working together to create pure ski flex.

EXO Shells:

The first of their kind, the EXO Shells are the only water ski specific injection molded boots ever created. The lower shell design has a wide platform base. This allows the skier to stand directly on the ski’s surface. The skier's feel is greatly increased as power is transmitted directly from the rigid supportive shell structure directly into the ski without the added damping element of the aluminum plate. The platform base design creates a strong lateral connection between EXO Shell and ski for increased edge angle.

The EXO Shells upper cuff was designed to accommodate no restrictions in the rearward flex range, allowing the skier to let the ski move outbound off the second wake more effectively. The EXO shells forward flex range was designed to have a definite stop point where the lower shell and upper cuff mechanically interface, protecting the skier’s ankle in out the front type falls.

The EXO Shells are available in two different Flex Index models, the EXO Pro and EXO Form. The EXO Pro (Flex Index 15) utilizes a stiffer shell and cuff compound for a quicker more powerful boot. The Course Fit Liner and Foot Bed are firm for instantaneous transfer of foot to ski movement. The EXO Form (Flex Index 10) is a slightly softer version of the EXO Pro. Complete with a Form Fit Liner and Foot Bed, the EXO Form offers a softer more plush feel in a high performance shell.

Both the EXO Pro and EXO Form models are offered in two different configurations, Double EXO Shells and the Front Cuff/Rear Toe Boot options. The Double EXO Shell configuration was designed to accommodate skiers who prefer the support of double boots. The EXO Shell Front Cuff/Rear Toe Boot option was specifically designed for skiers who traditionally use a rear toe plate or a soft rear boot. The Rear Toe Boot was designed extensively over the past ski season by 2009 World Champion Will Asher to provide the feel and range of motion rear toe plate skier's love, with the added benefit of keeping both feet together in out the front type falls. The Rear Toe Boot is the future! Every skier needs to try it to believe it!

Aaron Larkin Wins Moomba Masters on the new Radar Strada!

The 2010 Moomba Masters wrapped up yesterday in Melbourne, Australia and the tournament didn't disappoint! Some would say it was plagued by weather, but this tournament--staged yearly on the Yarra River in downtown Melbourne-- is known for its unpredictability. Of course, it's also known for it's fierce competitors and huge crowds as well.

One of the greatest competitors of all time, Freddy Krueger, captured the following video of one of the worst storms to hit Melbourne in decades. This is surely among a skiers' worst nightmares:

The storm certainly changed the conditions on the river, but it didn't dampen the competition. Waterski Magazine had pro skier Bill Susi write a daily blog, recapping the action. He did a great job of summing up day three, the culmination of the tournament on what is Australia's Labor Day. Check out the blog here.

One of the biggest things we're taking away from the first major tournament of the year is that the Radar Strada ski has made a huge impact in its very first tournament. Aaron Larkin, Radar Team Skier, took down the Mens' Slalom title after a ski-off with the great Chris Parrish. We've heard a lot of buzz from around the industry about the Strada, and this is the first indication that there's been good reason for such a ground swell. Boating Safety Class @ Redline

Mark your calendars for March 27, 2010, when the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be running a Boating Safety Class at Redline Watersports!

The class runs from 8am - 5pm and will be only $40. This fee includes the cost of a textbook and lunch. For each additional family member that shares the same text book, the fee is only $20.

Successful completion of the class includes Coast Guard Auxiliary and DNR Certificates. Remember, laws now require that everyone born after 1988 is required to take (and pass) Boaters' Safety in order to operate boats and PWCs. Simply having a drivers' license no longer does the job.

Parks Documentary takes home big award!

As you might know, the annual Sundance Film Festival is currently being held in and around Salt Lake City, Utah. Well, you might not know that there's a coinciding festival called the X-Dance Film Festival that just concluded at the same location. The X-Dance celebrates Action Sports culture, and has been around since 2001.

Parks Bonifay and Alliance Wake submitted their epic film, The Parks Documentary, to the festival and won the award for Best Biography!

Ronix Wakeboards has been a huge supporter of both Parks and the film itself, and just released a new flyer for all to enjoy:

Team Redline Members Hang With Scott Byerly!

So in case you’ve been living under a bus, the Byerly team is taking a road trip and throwing down across the country. Days off don’t happen that often so when they come, they take advantage;

So how does Scott Byerly spend his day off? Just like the rest of us. Kicks back, hits the water and spends time with friends. Pretty normal for the guy who basically pioneered wakeboarding and wakeskating.

The Fox River in Port Barrington, Ill was our spot for a day of Bags, BBQ, Boats, and 50cc bikes. I showed up in the afternoon just after the morning rounds where Ross Gardner was absolutely killing it on the skate. With a few hours to kill around lunchtime the BBQ and the bags games started. After getting shut out by team Gardner/Webber’s perfect game (21-0) it was onto Hoops and pig. Ross was on a roll and schooled everyone with only one hand.

With everything settling down it was boat time. A few friends did some shredding and footing to kick us off. In between sets we’re pretty sure we hit a sunken snowmobile with the boat, thanks to the river only been three or four feet deep in most places. Kyle Murphy was beat from the day before so he chilled out on shore and Scott got a pretty good grip tape burn in the morning and it was looking pretty ugly. Grossness. Ross stepped up and threw a line that rivaled most pro tour runs. Whirly5, Pete, Skeezer, Toe back 3, Front mobe, batwing, and Moby dicks just to name the first minute of his run.

A few more sets squeezed in and it was time to pack it up as the gang was off to Wake Nation in Ohio for the next stop.

But it doesn't stop there, even those who are just getting into water sports or have never even heard of our shop can come, hang out, learn, and have a great time experiencing the activities we are putting on. Sunday, August 2 - Fit To Be Tied - Your opportunity to come out and meet us on Three-Foot-Bay on Lake Mendota from 12 to 4. We'll have boats ready for surf demos, wake demos, tubing, and pontoons with boards and skis. If you're not interested in riding just hang out, our tie up is good for that too!

Warm up? What's a Warm up?

At our weekly meeting this morning it was brought to our attention that our resident ski guru Jon Bice had a pretty impressive weekend on the water. It began when he was asked to perform with the Shermalot ski team in Rome, Wisconsin. With the team, Jon barefooted, freestyle jumped, and based multiple pyramids all in one night. A pretty impressive achievement for a guy that spends 90% percent of his week in the shop helping our great customers.

The next morning came quickly as Jon was competing in 3 Event State on Lake Brandien in Big Flats, Wisconsin. The men's single jump began at 8 and Jon being the 3rd off the dock, there was little time to warm-up or prepare.

Did we mention Jon had not competitively jumped since regionals last fall in October?

Tension on and Jon at the mercy of the boat, there was little he could do other than let the athlete and 10+ years of skiing experience out. 112ft later and a Personal Best achieved Jon placed 4th in the state for the event, a pretty impressive feat given the circumstances, and a pretty impressive jump overall.

Redline is proud to support all of our Team members in whatever they do, inside the shop, and on or off the water. Congratulations Jon!

S1 put into action by Team Redline!

This morning we took the new HO S-1 out for the first time and man was it a ride! Just free skiing in open water, this ski hooked up and felt light as a feather.

Starting out, Bob Mahnke, former professional show skier, barefoot figure 8 champ and all around great skier mounted up. Before the Pro Star was even in gear Bob was amazed at how light the ski felt. Once up, Bob completely had to adjust to this new school ski. Coming off of a Phantom Truth, the multi-generational jump among skis put this legendary skier on his heels for a short bit. After a nice warm up set, Bob returned to the boat stunned at the difference.

Paul then jumped on, and for the second ski ride of the season, took some nice 22 off carves feeling the ski out. We only have the 67” and for his weight, it was a touch big. After adjusting his weight over the front binding through the center of the turn, the ski came to life and it finished the turn clean, giving him great angle for a fast ride through the wake.

Next, our young gun Jon jumped on and took a 36mph run. He too had to adjust forward to get a tighter radius through the turns. As a 36 mph skier, Jon felt the ski glided a bit too much after the second wake. This is exactly what we’d hoped for. See, most 36mph skiers who transition to 34 universally complain about the extra effort needed to get wide. Well, now you can carry your 36mph momentum at 34mph. YEAH FOR THE “OLD” GUYS!

For the final set, we set up the ski with a toe plate (Bob’s preference). During the rest period, Bob was very quiet, thinking about his new slalom adventure, but when he hit the water for set two, the athlete within surfaced. With the cruise set firmly at 34, the “mule” got into a rhythm and 25 turns later we had one happy skier. Score 2 for the S-1 and 1 for the A-1 (Jon has many years before Men’s 3 division).

Looking back and looking foward

The beginning of summer has (and this pun is most definitely intended) been hot and cold to say the least. Between the temperature and weather being less than favorable, and wind howling on the days we can go out, its been tough to find good water.

But fear not, the outlook for July is finally in our favor and what better way to celebrate than to treat yourself to a new pair of combo skis for the family, or upgrade that 10 year old slalom or wakeboard? Movie Premier, Woman's Driving Clinic, and a Wake Clinic?!

A movie about the struggle between a teen who's father has the rest of his life planned out for him and finding his own path... on the water. Boating Safety Class

Redline Watersports will be hosting a one day Boating Safety Class on March 28, 2009 from 8am until 5pm. Registration starts at 7:45am.

Space is limited and the class is filling up quickly. The cost of the class is $40 which includes a text book and lunch. Each additional family member sharing the textbook is $20. Upon completion of the class and passing a brief exam, you will receive a Coast Guard and DNR certificate.

FIT TO BE TIED! Redline Surf'n Saturday

Come out to Lake Mendota for Redline's "Fit to be Tied" Surf'n Saturday! We will be anchoring one of our JC Pontoons at 3-foot Bay and bringing out our X-45 to do some wake surfing! Bring your boat out and tie up to the pontoon and hang out, do some surfing and just enjoy the day.

Our back up location, in case of weeds, will be Picnic Point on Lake Mendota. Be sure to call us on our Events Hot-line if you have any questions once you get on the water.

Surf'n Saturday Recap!

What a great day for surfing on Lake Kegonsa. We want to thank Springer's on the Lake for there hospitality in letting us use there docks.

We also want to say thanks to everyone that came out and learned some new things about wake surfing. We got some new people out learning how to surf, witness a rider's first 360 on a wake surf and a huge surf wake!

Be sure to set this coming Saturday aside as we plan to hit Lake Mendota for another tie up. Stay posted for more details on time and place but be ready for more surfing!

Game On for Surf'n! July 26 at 10am.

We are ready, set and go for tomorrow's day filled with wakesurfing behind the X-45! Meet us out in front of Springer's on Lake Kegonsa. We will be out on the water until the mid-afternoon, so make sure to get there early for some great surf'n!
